Our Breeding Program
Our breeding practices focus on best practices with the goal to continuously improve the health of future dachshund generations. We believe it is essential to have a holistic approach prioritizing our dogs’ health and well-being, with a breed program rooted in responsible breeding for happier and healthier dogs.
Breeding Best Practics
- We are compliant with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding the ownership and maintenance of dogs.
- We are compliant with the AKC Care and Conditions Policy, including inspection(s) by the American Kennel Club.
- Pedigree assessments are done to create matches between dogs that show more health strengths than weaknesses.
- Ensure each puppy comes from healthy pedigree lines and heritage.
- Current parents and future breeding dogs are AKC/CKC registered with pedigrees.
- Maintain or increase bloodline diversity and minimize the risks associated with inbreeding.
- Physically health dogs are paired based on genetic health tests, clinical veterinarian examinations, conformation, parent temperaments, and overall health history.
- We are committed to continuous education on breeding practices to focus on improving the lives of our dogs.
Physical Health (Parent and Puppy)
- Tests are done to decrease the likelihood of producing puppies with heritable conditions. Genetic testing is performed on parent’s DNA across 262 breed-specific genetic health risks, 8 dachshund-breed relevant. These tests are to screen for the presence of certain disease-causing mutations.
- Our dogs receive regular and specialized veterinary care covering all aspects of the dog’s health.
- Our veterinarian performs physical and diagnostic examinations on parents and puppies. This includes up to date wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and flea and tick prevention.
- Parents and puppies are fed Purina Pro Plan food with probiotics. Pumpkin, fish oil, and supplements are given per vet recommendation.
Mental Health (Parent and Puppy)
- Breeding dogs' and puppies emotional and cognitive needs are met through exercise, social interaction, and neurological stimulation to support a strong foundation of behavioral development.
- We provide safe and stimulating experiences for parents and puppies by introducing them to exposure to:
- Early neurological stimulation through specific handling exercises for each puppy coupled with daily physical contact.
- Early exposure to different sounds and sensations daily
- Early and frequent socialization with family, friends, dogs, and cats
- Mental stimulation through use of various toys and playtime
- We implement early training and behavior coaching based on positive reinforcement methods.
- We give them lots of love!
Environment
- We have established environmental conditions that are targeted to support the overall well-being of dogs and puppies. We provide clean, comfortable, safe, and enriching environments where breeding dogs and puppies can flourish. Environment can play a critical role in the physical, mental, and emotional health of dogs and puppies.
- All dogs and puppies are indoor dogs and family members in our home. We are home with them full-time.
- We provide all dogs and puppies with clean indoor areas: home, crates, and play areas which are regularly cleaned and maintained.
- We have multiple fenced in yards safely treated for flea and tick prevention, with comfortable resting areas and weather protection
- Water is always available and frequent treats for awarding good behavior
- Puppies are kept with their mother and littermates in a custom nursery with whelping station, designated play run, crate training space, and open area for additional exercise and discovery until they’re ready for transition to their new home.
